What is a Feedreader ?
Simply, the role of the Feedreader is to gather and display web feeds (data format used for serving users frequently updated information) from various websites in one place. By using feedreader you can have updates from several websites delivered to you, without need to visit each of them individually. These updates can be anything from newly published articles, new answers to your questions (Yahoo Answers) or any other text information. Mostly people use them to get daily updates from blogs (like this one) and news from news aggregator sites like Google News.
My Feedreader keeps me up to date on almost 40 websites. It save me lots of time that I would otherwise spend on visiting each site individually. Tracking News and Articles is one of the most popular ways to use Feedreader, however there is no limit on the kind of information it can track for you.
For instance, a currency exchange website can offer real time feeds (that’s what goes into your feedreader) on the current exchange rates. Similarly, a soccer website can offer feeds for match scores and etc. When you let your feedreader track some website, there is no need to visit website to check for new items, as soon as there are relevant updates you will get them in your Feedreader.
First Step: Installing and Using a Feedreader
Bet you knew this was coming: Go to Google Play or The App Store and download it! Just enter "feedreader" in the search bar and voila! Several to choose from.
Open the app and you will be offered several "recommended" feeds. Choose the ones you want and finish up with your account setup. Now look for the menu option "add feed." Note: feeds use what is known as an "RSS file."
What is RSS?
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.
Why RSS? Benefits and Reasons for using RSS
RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News.
What do I need to do to read an RSS Feed? RSS Feed Readers and News Aggregators
Feed Reader or News Aggregator software allow you to grab the RSS feeds from various sites and display them for you to read and use.
A variety of RSS Readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows - integrates with Outlook). There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader are popular web-based feed readers.
Once you have your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. Many sites display a small icon with the acronyms RSS, XML, or RDF to let you know a feed is available.
The RSS feed address you will need to follow the "Honoring-the-Sabbath" forum is: honoring-the-sabbath.freeforums.net/rss/public
Just enter this address into the appropriate setting in adding your new feed and that's it! Next time you visit your feedreader app, it should all be right there.
